Job Description

Position Overview:
The Audiologist has the responsibility to coordinate the hearing conservation services which include identification and diagnostic evaluation of pupils having hearing impairment in the schools assigned. The audiologist is a member of an educational team, assisting to insure the least restrictive environment and making recommendations and arrangements for proper programming for all children who are deaf or hard of hearing. They willalso provide cooperative medical referral and follow-up services.

Qualifications:
The Audiologist must have a minimum of a M.A/M.S. Degree with major emphasis in educational audiology and aural habilitation, possess Iowa certification endorsement #36, or hold a valid Iowa license as an audiologist, and possess a Statement of Professional Recognition. The candidate
must have the experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, cooperative teamwork, multiagency coordination, and excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities:

Conduct a systematic screening program for identification of hearing loss.

Perform diagnostic-rehabilitative evaluations of children who fail the screening
program, those with known hearing loss, or those who have been referred.

Educate the public, school personnel, and other interested people on the need for
early detection and prevention of hearing impairment.

Initiate a cooperative program with participating area hospitals completing newborn
hearing screen that includes a procedure for follow-up services when
appropriate.

Initiate medical referrals and follow-up services through a cooperative program with
doctors, nurses and parents.

Inservice parents, AEA personnel, local school personnel and medical staff regarding
hearing related topics (e.g., hearing loss, classroom acoustics, assistive
listening devices).

Communicate the hearing status of children to appropriate personnel.

Recommend, fit, maintain, and trouble-shoot assistive listening devices and personal
amplification devices.

Assign daily activities of audiometrist.

Provide family support, including rehabilitative services, for children who are deaf
or hard of hearing.

Maintain a current knowledge of audiology practices and related areas of special
education.

Be responsible for the maintenance and calibration of audiometric equipment.

Maintain confidentiality of all student information.

Maintain data required for use in local school district (LEA), AEA, state and
federal reporting.

Comply with State and Federal rules and regulations and AEA policies and
procedures. 

Assume such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Regional
Special Education Director

Educational Audiologist Position Summary

This is a full time position with the Pinellas County School District’s Audiology Department in the state of Florida (St. Petersburg area).  The Educational Audiologist must be an experienced professional with appropriate qualifications to provide Education Audiology services to children who communicate through spoken language and/or sign language and who may use hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive listening devices.  The Educational Audiologist will be one of a team of four audiologists with a home base that houses two sound suites for diagnostic evaluation – and itinerant duties at select schools throughout the district.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

Au.D. or Masters in Audiology with 2-3 years of experience in a clinical setting. 

Eligible for Florida State Licensure in Audiology

The candidate must have a valid driver’s license and transportation

 

The ideal candidate may also have experience that includes:

 Audiology evaluations, including APD, as well as verification/validation techniques for personal and educational amplification devices.

Current knowledge of FM amplification systems

Willing to serve and participate in development of IEPs and 504 Plans

In-service training of classroom teachers regarding education implications of hearing loss, classroom acoustics, effective use of amplification devices (hearing aids and FM systems) and/or cochlear implant devices, and strategies for addressing student’s auditory needs.

Compensation for the Educational Audiologist will be dependent upon experience and in accordance with the District’s teacher contract.  The length of the contract is 10 months. Salary, benefits, and travel expenses to visit schools will be included.

Essential Functions:

Provide complete audiological assessment and services for all children in classes for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing programs.

Provide audiological follow-up/re-evaluation for students with identified hearing losses in special education programs located in varied areas in the County.

Participate in and use the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing program’s staff methodologies and approaches.

Counsel with parents regarding audiometric evaluations, care and use of hearing aids and auditory training strategies.

Participate in assuring that pupils have full educational opportunity regardless of the district or residence. 

Assist in providing trainings for staff, associated agencies and parents regarding issues related to student needs: i.e. cochlear implant, care of aides, etc.

Attend, participate in and provide appropriate goals & objectives for individual student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) meetings.

Perform other duties assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Personal Qualifications:

Demonstrates an understanding of the particular needs of children with hearing disabilities and their families.

Demonstrates personal characteristics which are conducive to good communication and self-management.

Presents self favorably, both in personality and physical appearance.

Possession of sign language skill is desired, but not required.

Professional Qualifications:

Performs duties and responsibilities with a high degree of professional integrity. 

Demonstrates the ability to keep abreast of current trends and research in areas of audiology.

Understands and has experience working with students with a speech and language delay due to a hearing impairment.

Able to work with the many agencies and organizations working with students with hearing disabilities and their families.

Able to present results of assessments and the interpretations clearly and with awareness of the impact on the student/family.

Must possess a private vehicle, valid California driver’s license and carry current automobile insurance with at least minimum coverage for public liability and property damage.

Fingerprint clearance by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met.

TRAINING AND/OR CREDENTIALS

Education:

Appropriate California credential(s) or equivalent as specified by law which should include a valid Master’s Degree in Audiology and a Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential in Audiology. 

A Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology is desired.

Must possess a background in pediatric audiology or educational audiology.

Specialized, in-depth knowledge in hearing aids, auditory training strategies and current electro-acoustic instrumentation.

Experience:   

At least three years or the equivalent of providing successful audiological services for Special Education programs for students from the infant level through high school.

Successful experience writing goals and objectives for students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Successful inter-agency work with California Children’s Services is desired.
