About the BMQ-R

The BMQ-R comprises 48 frequently observed characteristics associated with auditory processing disorder, organized by the Buffalo Model categories. Completed by the patient, parent, or teacher, it informs referral, evaluation, and post-therapy assessment when used together with the Buffalo Model diagnostic test battery and sound clinical judgment. The BMQ-R is a screening instrument and does not, on its own, establish a diagnosis.

History

The Buffalo Model Questionnaire was developed by the late Dr. Jack Katz, a founding figure in the study of auditory processing disorders, and revised in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Zalewski. The current version (9-2020) reflects successive refinements of the original tool, with items rephrased for clarity while preserving the same 48 characteristics and Buffalo Model categories.

Dr. Katz was a strong supporter of the Educational Audiology Association and arranged for EAA to offer the questionnaire in support of the organization’s mission. EAA is proud to continue making the BMQ-R available to the audiology community as the authoritative home for the current edition, with the ongoing support of the tool’s authors.

Results do not constitute a diagnosis of auditory processing disorder and should be interpreted together with the Buffalo Model diagnostic test battery, case history, and clinical judgment.
